(Newington, CT) -- Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner James P. Redeker will lead a CTfastrak project construction briefing and tour of the Flatbush Avenue Station and bridge site in West Hartford this Monday, August 13, 2012, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. This will be the first construction tour and update of the CTfastrak transit project, slated for completion in late 2014.

News personnel should enter the construction site and park using the entrance gate at 464 New Park Avenue, West Hartford, near the Apple Tree/Raymour & Flanigan parking lot. The tour will include a look at the future station, bridge and dedicated roadway sites. The event will be held rain or shine. (Directions to the event: Going east on I-84, take the Prospect Avenue Exit 44 and take a right onto Prospect Avenue at the light then right onto New Park Avenue. The parking entrance will be on the immediate left after the Flatbush Avenue intersection. Going west, take the Flatbush Avenue Exit 45 off of I-84, then right onto Flatbush Avenue and left onto New Park Avenue. The parking entrance will be 50 ft. down on the left).

The Flatbush Avenue Station will include a large center island platform where all CTfastrak shuttle buses will stop, an express lane on the dedicated roadway for buses that bypass this station, a local bus stop on New Park Avenue and a limited number of parking spaces and a convenient drop-off location inside the parking area for riders. The new bridge will be realigned approximately 75 feet south of the existing Flatbush Avenue surface roadway and built over a newly installed wick drain and geotechnical monitoring system that will ensure bridge reliability and longevity.

About CTfastrak

The 9.4 mile CTfastrak route is being constructed on an abandoned railroad corridor from New Britain to Newington Junction and from Newington Junction to Hartford's Union Station alongside the active Amtrak rail right of way. CTfastrak will feature shuttle, express and feeder routes that directly access the dedicated roadway as well as connecting with all local bus routes in the New Britain, Hartford and Waterbury areas and with Amtrak service in Hartford and Metro-North Waterbury Branch rail service in Waterbury. As a result the CTfastrak system will benefit a large geographic area and provide a one-seat, no transfer ride to regional employment, shopping and healthcare destinations. Buses will operate from approximately 4:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. CTfastrak will offer improved service and travel times between New Britain and Hartford for all of these shuttle and express routes by avoiding traffic on area highways.
